Gingerbread has always been a favorite delicacy in Russia.

The gingerbread was very diverse in shape. They were made in the form of birds, fish, animals, fantastic animals, steamships, towers and even human figures.

         According to the manufacturing technology, gingerbread cookies are divided into three main types: molded, cut-out and printed.

         Printed gingerbread was printed on dough with wooden forms — the so-called gingerbread boards.

         Having received an imprint on the dough with the help of such a board, the gingerbread was baked.

         The wood for gingerbread boards should be free of cracks, knots and rot.

Master class: gingerbread board

          First of all, you need to draw a gingerbread board with a pencil on a piece of paper in full size, that is, to make a sketch.

 First, with a cutter and semicircular chisels, I make deep slits along the lines drawn with a pencil. Then, with a wide semicircular chisel, I select the wood within the contours to a shallow depth.

         You need to work carefully, cutting thin shavings evenly on all the treated areas, constantly turning the board. The deeper the indentations, the thicker and more voluminous the gingerbread printed from such a gingerbread board will be.

         When performing the carving elements, it is always necessary to clearly imagine that any recess on the wooden mold will become a protrusion when printing on a gingerbread.

         Before printing the gingerbread, I wipe the mold once or twice with oil. This is necessary so that the dough does not stick to the gingerbread board when printing gingerbread.
